Book Review: The Other Boleyn Girl

I read The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory in its entirety years ago. I remember liking it. This month I was to re-read it because my book club voted for it.

One hundred and fifty some odd pages in and I just can’t anymore. I feel like I am wasting my time on a mediocre read.

I guess I had learned quite a bit more about the Tudor period between readings because the historical inaccuracies drove me batty. I understand artistic license and I understand that different historians have different theories. However, a lot of what was used in the novel was completely unfounded, disputed suggestions about the period.

The flowery language and Mary’s youthful ignorance also drove me insane for the first hundred pages. She changes (which is good) but then the book absolutely digs into Anne. I hate the way she is portrayed and I could not get over it.

So I am putting this aside. I remember enough and I know enough to lead the book club discussion. But I have such precious little time to waste on reading things I don’t enjoy.
